1 Corinthians 13:4-7
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Could you imagine trying to explain what love is to someone who has never experienced it? It may be like trying to explain what a Hot Dog is to someone in a remote location of Africa who has never seen or had one. It wouldn’t be easy. The video below is a great demonstration of Love being kind.
In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 the Apostle Paul wrote one of the most famous descriptions of love to date. When Paul describes love he doesn’t define it like a dictionary would he describes it in how it should be displayed as we seen in the video. Lets take a look at the first two description of Paul’s letter here when he says, “Love is Patient and kind”. Those sounds easy to understand, fair and applicable but in the NKJV translation it says “Love suffers long and is kind” and so that suffering part probably doesn’t sound quite as fair. See Paul understood that Love suffers long for the flaws and immaturity of others because God is Love. “Love is patient” is a passive approach on how we can show Love to others. In Romans 5:8 & Romans 5:10 the Bible tells us that while we were still sinners\enemies of God he withheld his wrath from us because he Loved us. He was patient with us. The second description Paul gives us is that Love is Kind. “Love is Kind” is the action of Love. We see this in Luke 6:35 when Jesus tells us to Love our enemies and do good. Kindness is an active state of showing Love to others. Look at Ephesians 2:7 & Romans 2:4 where the writers show us Gods kindness toward us.
So ask yourself are you willing to suffer long days & nights for the flaws & immaturity of others? Are you willing to act in kindness toward someone that doesn’t like you or maybe has done harm to you? We as people were flawed, enemies and strangers to God but God who is Love demonstrated his patients by holding back his wrath and then displayed his kindness by giving us his son Jesus.
Love is patient and kind because God, who is love, is patient and kind.
