Serving Christ Under Authority
In 1 Timothy 6:1-2, Paul instructs believers to serve with a Christlike attitude, honoring those in authority while working diligently. Our respect and faithful actions reflect God’s character and uphold the integrity of His Word.
Appointing Elders in the Church
In 1 Timothy 5:22-25, Paul teaches that we are to affirm elders carefully in the local church. True character is revealed over time, as both sin and virtue eventually come to light. Therefore, we are to wait and assess the character of men before affirming them to leadership in the Church.
Honoring and Disciplining Elders
In 1 Timothy 5:17-21 Paul teaches us of the importance of honoring faithful pastor-elders by respecting and supporting them. However, if leaders are unfaithful and fall into serious sin, they must be disciplined. This reminds us of the seriousness of sin and the importance of holiness in the church. We are the household of the Holy One who has purchased us by His own blood.
Family Matters: Caring for the Family of God
Paul instructs Timothy to treat older men as fathers, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. The tone we use matters because the relationships matter. He then addresses the care of widows, teaching the church that compassion must be paired with wisdom.
